TLS is the new name for SSL. "TLS" means "Transport Layer Security". The name was changed to avoid any legal issues with SSL inventor "Netscape" so that the protocol could be "open and free". TLS are security protocols that allow data being transmitted to be encrypted. With TLS encryption users can access email through a third-party email clients without fearing that someone has intercepted their data. SSL will encrypt the connection immediately upon connection. TLS will encrypt once the STARTTLS command is sent. TLS uses standard ports 25,587, 110, 143.
